Bill Millin was the "Mad Piper" who played allied commandos ashore under heavy German fire at Sword Beach in Normandy on D-Day, on the extreme eastern flank of Operation Overlord.
Before we really hop in, we need to set the scene a little bit and give the historical context.
Sword Beach was one of the five landing zones on the Normandy coast during the D-Day invasion of World War II. Here are some key events that took place at Sword Beach on June 6, 1944:
