Venezuelans are voting in a controversial referendum the government hopes will strengthen its claim over Essequibo, a territory that's legally part of neighboring Guyana. The vote is non-binding and comes after the United Nations top court ordered Caracas not to take any action that would alter Guyana's control over the territory.

Essiquibo is 160,000 square kilometers, about the size of Greece – and makes up about two-thirds of Guyana's territory. Gas and oil were discovered there in 2015.
