Persecution of the Jews by Antiochus Epiphanes resulted in the Maccabean Revolt led by Mattathias Hasmoneas and his sons, especially Judas. They won military victories against great odds, purified the temple, and established a dynasty. The Samaritans were a mixed race that resulted from intermarriage of Israelites with foreigners moved in by Assyria. They had a mixed religion that acknowledged God but compromised with false religion.
