According to authorities, a Daytona police officer was stabbed in the face during a physical altercation at a Sunoco gas station on the morning of December 1st.

The officer fatally shot the man after being stabbed in the face. Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said that the owner of the Sunoco gas station called police after the suspect was trespassing for a second time.

A Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy who was already at the scene approached the man first before the Daytona Beach officers arrived just moments later. Young said:

“As they approach the suspect, they attempt to detain him, and the fight is on.”

During the struggle, Young said that the suspect had a light in one of his hands and at some point, the man pulled out a knife from his pocket and proceeded to stab the Daytona Beach officer in the face. The officer then shot the suspect twice, killing him.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, thankfully. Young said:

“My officer sustained a laceration to the face as a result of being stabbed by the suspect. He fired two shots and the suspect has passed away as a result of those gunshots.”

“It goes to show you how fast, when you see the body camera footage, an encounter over a trespasser turned deadly. Thank God the Daytona officer is going to recover. I think we should be really proud of the way these guys acted. It’s what they were told to do. They did their job.”

The suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Benjamin Remley, a local to Volusia County. He has previous criminal history, which includes two felony convictions and two misdemeanor convictions.

The officer that fired the two shots is on paid administrative leave, which follows policy and procedure after an officer involved shooting.
