How I clip Jericho's claws (easy how-to)

Clipping your cat's claws takes patience. Use cat trimmers, avoid the quick, and make it a routine using these simple tips.

Human nail clippers can splinter your cat's claw.

The pink quick inside the claw contains blood vessels. Clipping the quick is very painful and bloody.

I bring Jericho into the bathroom since it's a small dedicated space.

Sit him on my lap facing away from me. Then I let him smell the clippers before I trim.

I work on one paw at a time going slowly.

Gently press the toe to expose the nail and clip straight across.

Only focus on trimming the sharp tip. Do not go too far up on the nail!

If you clip the quick, it is very painful and bloody!

Keep some styptic powder handy just in case.

Once we're done, Jericho lays in my lap for heavy petting and massage.

This is our routine, and we do this every time I trim his claws.

Some tips to adjust

Gently massage your cat's paws to get him used to you touching his paws. Do this while he's napping with you.

Gently press his toe so he gets used to that too.

Bring your cat into the room you plan to clip.

Put him in your lap, and clip some spaghetti pieces next to him. This will help your cat get used to the clip sound.

Don't forget to clean up the spaghetti pieces!

Work on one claw at a time, and if your cat squirms let him go.

Never force it! You don't want to scare your cat or accidentally clip the quick.

You want your cat to get used to the routine and allow you to trim his claws.

Provide proper scratching areas in your home! ALL cats love to scratch!

Scratching is beneficial for enrichment and mental stimulation.

No, I do not reward with treats.

Just get him used to the routine slowly and reward him with petting or play time after your clipping session.

How often to clip?

It depends on how many claws you can get in one session. Usually, I have to clip Jericho's claws every 2-3 weeks.
