Black Butterflies by Priscilla Morris. BBC RADIO DRAMA
A story of domestic family life upended and fractured by inconceivable events which seem, even now, both far away and close at hand. The story begins in the spring of 1992 in the city of Sarajevo, as political tensions are mounting and barricades begin to appear in the streets.
Fifty-five year old Zora is married to Franjo, who is fifteen years older than her. Her daughter lives in Wiltshire, England. Zora’s vocation is her work as an artist, notably a painter of landscapes and the bridges that span the river of her beloved Sarajevo. She teaches art students, but in the afternoons retreats to her studio high in the eaves of the city’s magnificent public library to work on her canvases.
When violence finally spills over, Zora sends her husband and elderly mother to safety in England to stay with her daughter. Reluctant to believe that hostilities will last more than a few weeks, she stays behind to paint and teach while the city falls under siege.
War does not come suddenly: it creeps. Familiar daily life collapses slowly by degrees - first the phone is cut off, then the electricity and finally the water. As the assault deepens and everything they love is laid to waste, black ashes floating over the rooftops, Zora and her friends are forced to rebuild themselves, over and over. Theirs is a breath-taking story of disintegration, resilience and hope.
Written by Priscilla Morris
Read by Fenella Woolgar
Abridged and Produced by Jill Waters
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in March 2024
Priscilla Morris is of Yugoslav and Cornish parentage, she grew up in London and spent her summers in Sarajevo. Black Butterflies is her first novel and was shortlisted for the 2023 Women’s Prize for Fiction.

The Laxian Key by Chris Larner and David Gilbert. BBC RADIO DRAMA
Stephen Hawking once warned us that our species could soon be wiped out by plagues, asteroids and our tendency to destroy ourselves. The solution, he suggested, was for us to colonise other planets. But Chris Larner and David Gilbert's sci-fi comedy drama sees the truth as being a little more complicated.
Set in the year 2150, Arnold and Gregor work as planetary decontaminators via their own firm, AAA Ace Eco-Friendly Interplanetary Decontamination. Their job is to clean up polluted planets to make them habitable for humans. One such place is Planet Party, where several space tourists have died when landing there. With a big cash award given to anyone who can clean it up, it looks like Arnold and Gregor might do the deadly job.
However, they soon get side-tracked by an alien music box they buy cheap from Joe the Interstellar Junkman which discharges a strangle liquid that dissolves anything it touches. It’s not long before the 87th floor of a skyscraper in Streatham starts to melt, followed by London, and ultimately the entire Earth.
According to the song in the music box, the only thing that can stop the melting is something called "The Laxian Key".

Jane Eyre (1962) Saturday Night Theatre. BBC RADIO DRAMA
Jane Eyre is a novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë, published under the pen name "Currer Bell", on 16 October 1847, by Smith, Elder & Co. of London. The first American edition was published the following year by Harper & Brothers of New York. Jane Eyre is a Bildungsroman which follows the experiences of its eponymous heroine, including her growth to adulthood and her love for Mr. Rochester, the brooding master of Thornfield Hall.
The novel revolutionised prose fiction by being the first to focus on its protagonist's moral and spiritual development through an intimate first-person narrative, where actions and events are coloured by a psychological intensity. Charlotte Brontë has been called the "first historian of the private consciousness", and the literary ancestor of writers like Proust and Joyce.
The book contains elements of social criticism with a strong sense of Christian morality at its core, and it is considered by many to be ahead of its time because of Jane's individualistic character and how the novel approaches the topics of class, sexuality, religion, and feminism. It, along with Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, is one of the most famous romance novels of all time

A six-part radio drama about a group of Manchester teens fighting for justice.
When their friend Keith Brandon is charged with murdering a policeman, Gemma, Liam and Andy decide to bunk off school and go to his trial. Although Keith had a knife, a motive and has confessed to the crime, they're sure he didn't do it - so when he's found guilty, they can't believe it.
Determined to prove Keith's innocence, they take their story to the local media, but no-one will take them seriously. Then Gemma comes up with an unorthodox way of appealing for new evidence: setting up their own pirate radio station...
But someone's trying to warn them off. First they receive a letter telling them to 'stop looking', then Andy's mum - a police officer - is suspended from the force. Unafraid, they keep broadcasting - only to uncover sinister surprises and dangerous secrets.

Six Suspects By Vikas Swarup. BBC RADIO DRAMA
Seven years ago, Vivek - Vicky - Rai, the playboy son of the Home Minister of Uttar Pradesh, murdered bartender Ruby Gill at a trendy restaurant in New Delhi, simply because she refused to serve him a drink.
Now Vicky Rai has been killed at the party he was throwing to celebrate his acquittal. The police recover six guests with guns in their possession: a corrupt bureaucrat who claims to have become Mahatma Gandhi overnight; an American tourist infatuated with an Indian actress; a stone-age tribesman on a quest to recover a sacred stone; a Bollywood sex-symbol with a guilty secret; a mobile-phone thief who dreams big; and an ambitious politician prepared to stoop low.
Swarup unravels the lives and motives of the six suspects, offering both a riveting page-turner and an insightful peek into the heart of contemporary India. Audaciously and astutely plotted, with a panoramic imaginative sweep, Six Suspects is the work of a master storyteller.
From Vikas Swarup, the author of the international bestseller Slumdog Millionaire comes a richly-textured tale of murder, corruption, and opportunity.

A psychological study of the religious reformer Martin Luther, who is portrayed as an angry man struggling with self-doubts and his desire to believe. With the Pope using the sale of indulgences to fund his own obsessions and works, Luther had begun to see the church as corrupt. Luther reputedly hammered his 95 theses on the door of All Saints Church, Wittenberg - starting what became known as the Reformation. He was excommunicated in 1521.

The Charge of the Light Brigade by John Osborne. BBC RADIO DRAMA
The Charge of the Light Brigade
John Osborne’s unperformed screenplay of the famous Charge of the Light Brigade at the battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War encapsulates all the grandeur and folly of war.
Nothing in British military history has ever equalled the tragic farce that was the charge of the Light Brigade. John Osborne’s screenplay captures the spirit of this military disaster in which the fatal mismanagement of the events rested with the Earls of Cardigan (Charles Dance) and Lucan (Sir Donald Sinden), brothers-in-law and sworn enemies for more than thirty years.
The fatal message for the troop to charge was carried by Captain Nolan (Joseph Fiennes) and the whole scene was witnesses by the Commander in Chief, Lord Raglan (Alec McCowen) and General Airey (Geoffrey Palmer) from the heights above the battlefield.
The radio version opens in London with Osborne (Michael Feast) himself writing the screenplay and setting the scene (taken from Osborne’s own directions) in which the characters and situation emerge whereby this giant folly occurred.

Anthony Berkeley was a journalist, novelist, and founding member of the Detection Club - whose members included Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers - and was one of crime fiction's greatest innovators, developing the idea of the psychological crime novel in the 1920s and 30s. One of Berkeley’s recurring and most-beloved characters was Roger Sheringham, a novelist and amateur detective.
In Jumping Jenny, written in 1933, Roger attends a party with the questionable theme 'famous murderers and their victims', only to discover that one difficult guest has been deliberately killed on one of the party's props. When Roger suspects one of his close friends may be involved, he decides to meddle in the evidence - but is he putting his own life at risk with this mischievous intervention?

A Kind of Alaska by Harold Pinter. BBC RADIO DRAMA
Harold Pinter was born in London in 1930. His career as a playwright began with a production of The Room in 1957. His second play, The Birthday Party, closed after eight performances but was enthusiastically reviewed by critics. His early works were described by critics as "comedies of menace". Later plays such as No Man's Land (1975) and Betrayal (1978) became known as "memory plays".
His writing career spanned over 50 years and he produced 29 original stage plays, 27 screenplays, many dramatic sketches, radio and TV plays, poetry, one novel, short fiction, essays, speeches, and letters. He appeared as an actor in productions of his own work on radio and film, and directed nearly 50 productions for stage, theatre and screen.
Despite frail health after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in December 2001, Pinter continued to act on stage and screen. In 2005 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature and, in the same year, the Wilfred Owen Award for Poetry and the Franz Kafka Award (Prague). Pinter’s last performance was in October 2006, in the title role of Samuel Beckett's one-act monologue Krapp's Last Tape, for the 50th anniversary season of the Royal Court Theatre. In 2006 he was awarded the Europe Theatre Prize and, in 2007, the highest French honour, the Légion d'Honneur. He died in December 2008.
Presented here is a selection of Pinter’s best works, broadcast by BBC Radio across 6 decades.

Pilgrim Series 2 by Sebastian . BBC RADIO DRAMA
Paul Hilton stars as Pilgrim in the award-winning BBC Radio supernatural drama by Sebastian Baczkiewicz.
In 1185 William Palmer was making a pilgrimage to Canterbury. Unbeknown to him, his fellow pilgrim was the King of the Grey Folk. When William claimed that the church would eradicate belief in the Faerie world, he was cursed by the Faerie King: condemned to live forever and walk for eternity between the worlds of magic and of men.
Palmer, now known as Pilgrim, continues on his mission to this day, to preserve the uneasy balance between the two worlds and protect mankind from an enemy they resist believing in. His quests include retrieving a stolen dragons egg, aiding Joseph of Arimathea from the clutches of psychopathic angels, searching for the Radiant Boy - a sinister harbinger of impending death; acquiring copper, silver and gold to rescue a group of people trapped in a mine by a malevolent spirit; and tracking down and punishing a former friend who has betrayed him.
