We had a wonderful stay at Renosterbos at Nona Rosa Bush Camp. We hit the road and started making our way to Die Damhuis. On our way there we came across some great gravel roads. We decided to go and visit the small coastal town called Witsand. We were amazed to see the huge beach and not to mention the sand dunes coming onto the roads in the suburbs! Afterwards we headed for Renosterbos at the Nona Rosa Bush camp. We were fortunate to stay in a huge house, just the two of us. This one has it all. We started on the gravel road and it turned out to be a rescue mission to save a tiny tortoise crossing the road. We had to stop and make sure he or she got to the other side safely. On the same dirt road we saw a tree with so many bird nests in we had to share that and we found a small village called Vermaaklikheid which we have never heard of. Skulpiesbaai Nature Reserve on the beach where visitors can come and braai on the beach was another gem we discovered and not to mention the 3000-year old shell midden which is a must-see when you're in this area. This is where the San people used to come and eat shellfish. Who would've thought we would find these interesting and gorgeous sights as we travel around South Africa! The beautiful river crossing we found on the gravel road as we left Wild Rescue on our way to Still Bay. After checking in at Wild Rescue, I was told about the tortoise rescue operation they had on the reserve and the other exciting projects they have at Wild Rescue, like the vervet monkey enclosure they have just completed. I was able to help a tortoise myself while being there! We left Riversdale travelling to Wild Rescue and looked for gravel roads again as usual. This time I took a wrong turn somehow and ended up travelling between farmlands which was great. The road from Ladismith to Riversdale was the surprise. The race we had with the Ostrich was fun and we did not expect to find Garcia’s Pass, I didn’t even know it existed. This was a gem we discovered. The winding road and the views were breathtaking. When we left Free-at-Last, we came across really beautiful river crossings with the most stunning landscape and birdlife. I love to stop at places like this and just listen. The sounds of nature at the river were absolutely mind blowing. Spending time at these locations like Ladismith and Free-at-Last gives us the opportunity to relax, reflect and recharge, and make us enjoy the smaller things in life, like the zebra that were too far for you to see and the old churches we find in the small towns. The gravel roads we travelled on in this episode were some of the best roads we have driven thus far. From the route past Fish Eagle Private Resort, past Nel’s River Dam & Reservoir, through Calitzdorp and then to top it off is discovering gems like the Huisrivier Pass. These places I never even heard about. Oudtshoorn is known as the Ostrich capital of the world and not too far outside of Oudsthoorn we found them. I was very lucky that I could get very close to some. Most of the Ostrich we saw were still young but not afraid of humans. Closer to Ladismith we found a gravel road which took us through beautiful roads up and over mountains, farms, rivers and valleys. After breakfast we left De Kraal and travelled to Oudtshoorn to stock up on food and fill up with fuel before hitting the road to Free-at-Last. When I saw the entrance to the Cango Wildlife Ranch I had to stop to show you. Walking into the Crocodiles jaw's. We left the foot of the Swartberg Pass and travelled to the outskirts of Oudtshoorn to a tented campsite called De Kraal. This is where we spent the evening. The tents were exactly what we needed. The ideal ending to the perfect day was the most African sunset in the Klein Karoo I captured while standing at the braai fire. Our plan was to travel up the Swartberg Pass and show you its beauty but little did we know that it would be so special in the mist and rain. The gravel roads and the switchbacks up the mountain were mind blowing. We can just imagine what it would look like in the sunshine. To continue our travels around the country we had to go back to Prince Albert where we left off in the last episode. On our way there we stopped off at Matjiesfontein. This historic town situated along the N1 is a must visit. On our travel through the historic town of Prince Albert in the Klein Karoo, we came across this old building, which turned out to be a church. This church was built in 1909, over one hundred years old. We saw amazing fossils which were discovered in the Karoo National Park before travelling to Prince Albert. These are truly incredible prehistoric finds. The exciting part was the search for gravel roads to travel on and boy did we find some great ones. Travelling through the Karoo National Park was amazing and driving up Klipspringer Pass which is located in the park revealed incredible views. Getting out of the vehicle to check out the huge gorges which have been formed over thousands of years were simply spectacular. Remember there are lions in this park, so only get out of your vehicle at the demarcated areas and you do this at your own risk. After leaving Fraserburg in the Northern Cape, we had to travel through the amazing Teekloof pass to get to the Karoo National Park near Beaufort West in the Western Cape, South Africa. The landscape was truly stunning. This breathtaking road we travelled just added to our experience. Fraserburg is one of the smallest towns I have ever travelled to in the Northern Cape South Africa. It also has a big church. After a long day of travel on gravel roads to a farm just outside of Sutherland South Africa and a good night’s rest we couldn’t decide if we should go to Fraserburg or the Karoo National Park in Beaufort West. The big question was though, how can we travel to Sutherland and not visit "SALT" the Southern African Large Telescope at the Astronomical Observatory. We had to leave Kromrivier Cederberg Park and travel to Clanwilliam to have the flat tyre repaired, we are low on fuel and no cell phone signal. This day really taught me the importance of planning and being prepared for almost anything on the gravel roads and back roads we are travelling. Because of this we had to change our plans and route. We saw the amazing Clanwilliam dam and also crossed over the Middleberg pass which made it worth it.
