Butcher and The Boys will soon be back on our screens in season 4, and it looks like there’s a lot to look forward to, if the latest trailer is anything to go by.

The footage begins with Butcher (Karl Urban) revealing that he’s running out of time to live as he assembles the gang for an assault on Homelander (Anthony Starr) and the supes community.

The rest of the trailer features everything you’d expect from the show, including a lot of violence and gore.

The trailer also confirms that there will be a crossover with the new college-set spinoff Gen V, as Maddie Phillips's Cate Dunlap and Asa Germann’s Sam Riordan make an appearance.

So, without further ado, here's everything we know about The Boys season 4 so far.

More like this
The Boys season 4 release date
The Boys season 4 will be released on Thursday 13th June.

In true Billy Butcher fashion, the Prime Video show's release date was confirmed earlier this year with a sweary poster, declaring: "Break out the f***ing confetti."

The series will premiere with three episodes released at once followed by an episode each week. It will conclude with the season finale on 18th July.

The Boys was officially renewed for a fourth season on Friday 10th June 2022, just one week after season 3 premiered on Prime Video with strong reviews and fan engagement.

Amazon Studios' head of global television, Vernon Sanders, said at the time: "From our first conversation with Eric Kripke and the creative team about season 3 of The Boys, we knew the show was continuing to get even bolder – an impressive feat considering the wild success of the Emmy-nominated second season."

He added: "The Boys continues to push boundaries in storytelling, while also being relentlessly entertaining and threading the needle on social satire that feels all too real.

"This stylised world of the series has incredible global reach, and the viewership for opening weekend is proof of that."

Some fans have theorised that the show was nearing its natural conclusion during season 3, but Eric Kripke refused to weigh in when quizzed by RadioTimes.com, citing his past claim that Supernatural would end after five seasons (it ran for 15 in total).

He said: "As the person who was literally the most wrong in the world of how long a show should go – like, there's no showrunner in the history of the medium who has ever been so wrong about when his show was going to end – I would say that I've learned well from that mistake, and I don't really give away where my endpoints are anymore."

How many episodes will there be in The Boys season 4?
There will be eight episodes in The Boys season 4.

That's exactly what we would have expected, as it's the same length as all three previous seasons.

The show will air in instalments dropping weekly from 13th June until its season finale on 18th July.

The Boys season 4 cast: Who will return?
The returning cast of The Boys is as below:

Jack Quaid as Hughie Campbell
Karl Urban as Billy Butcher
Erin Moriarty as Annie/Starlight
Laz Alonso as Mother's Milk
Karen Fukuhara as Kimiko
Tomer Capone as Serge/Frenchie
Antony Starr as Homelander
Chace Crawford as The Deep
Colby Minifie as Ashley Barrett
Simon Pegg as Hugh Campbell Snr
Cameron Crovetti as Ryan
Olivia Morandin as Zoe Neuman
Jim Beaver as Robert "Bob" Singe
Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy
Nathan Mitchell as TBC
We also have some new faces to welcome, including:

Susan Heyward as Sister Sage
Valorie Curry as Firecracker
Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Joe Kessler
Rosemarie DeWitt as TBC
Rob Benedict as TBC
Elliot Knight as TBC

Of course, it wouldn't be The Boys without Jack Quaid's Hughie and Karl Urban's Billy Butcher - although Butcher is going to have to do some work to redeem himself when it comes to his old friends.

The trailers have also gave us a sneak peek at Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character, Joe Kessler - and it seems he and Butcher go way back.

We're expecting plenty more familiar faces, too, including Erin Moriarty's Starlight, who we saw back in action in the trailer after she decided to hang up her cape last season. Karen Fukuhara's Kimiko and Tomer Capone's Serge/Frenchie will also be back in business, completing the gang alongside Laz Alonso's Mother's Milk.

Cameron Crovetti, who plays Homelander's son Ryan will also have more of a role to play in season 4, as he's been promoted to a series regular.

Speaking about where his story will go, Kripke told Variety: "Ryan is a really important piece of the story because he’s half Becca, half Homelander.

"If Butcher can figure out how to get his s**t together and get the kid back, that could be the single best weapon they have against Homelander. But vice versa. If Homelander wins the kid over, that’s apocalyptic, because then there’s two Homelanders."

We'll also see the continuation of Colby Minifie's Ashley Barrett and, while nothing is confirmed, we're not ruling out more appearances from characters introduced in Gen V. Could Hughie cross paths with Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair)? We'd love to see it!

Meanwhile, although Black Noir's story has had quite the twists and turns, we're also set to see original actor Nathan Mitchell back in action!

Kripke has teased that Mitchell will play a new character after the shocking events in the season 3 trailer, and recalled sitting down to tell him, telling EW: "I think I literally said something like, 'OK, so I'm gonna say something and your stomach's gonna drop, but then I'm gonna follow it up with something and you're gonna see that it's okay.'"

Plus, there some new additions to look forward to! We'll be welcoming new supes, including Susan Heyward as Sister Sage and Valorie Curry as Firecracker.

What will happen in the plot of The Boys season 4?
An official synopsis for the new season reads: "The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power.

"Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca's son, as well as his job as The Boys' leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late."

So... no pressure.

The trailer also gave us our first glimpse at Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character, saw Starlight back in action after she hung up her cape and featured a chilling shot of Homelander drenched in blood.

The finale of Gen V season 1 has given us some indication as to how things could play out in the upcoming season, with Homelander’s (Antony Starr) cameo giving us our biggest hint at how things might cross over.

Sam and Cate’s heroic actions in the final episode made it clear they’d make great assets to Homelander’s team and, with Marie now out of the picture, fans could see them join the Seven in season 4, while the Gen V post-credits scene saw Billy Butcher roaming the woods...

Creator Eric Kripke previously told RadioTimes.com that the season 3 finale – which left the cast in a pretty dire situation as Butcher (Karl Urban) learned he doesn’t have very long to live – will pave the way for the next instalment.

"The storylines that we have set up need to smash into each other at the end of this season," he explained. "And out of that explosion comes the new threads of the storyline, that then we pick up [in] season 4."

Jessie T Usher, who plays speedster A-Train in the superhero drama, added that the Seven are "worse off than when we began" by the end of season 3, which could mean even more unpredictable behaviour ahead from the remaining members.

The story of The Boys season 4 is likely to be another mix of plot elements from the original comic books and new ideas inspired by real-world headlines.

In July 2022, Karl Urban revealed to Collider that even he wasn't sure exactly what would happen in the next season, but he had no doubt it would be "insane".

"We're about two months away from filming, and I have no idea [what will happen]. So that'll tell you something, but yeah, not too far away... I'm actually going to be seeing Kripke next week and I expect conversations will start to happen about what he's got in store," said Urban.
When Amazon‘s “The Boys” debuts its fourth season next month, things are shaping up to be crazier than the time they blew up a whale and that other time they blew up a giant penis, as it seems Butcher (Karl Urban) and Homelander (Antony Starr) are ready to burn their whole lives down — and take everyone else with them.

In “The Boys” Season 4 trailer, Butcher reveals to Hughie (Jack Quaid), Starlight (Erin Moriarty) and the rest of the Boys that time is running out for him, and with the few numbered days he and his weakened heart have left, he’s looking to unleash a deadly virus on the supe community. (Yes, the same virus that he discovered when he made a cameo in the finale for Season 1 of spinoff “Gen V.”) To get the job done, Butcher has teamed up with new character, played by “Supernatural” alum Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who seems to want supes wiped out entirely as soon as possible to save humanity.

Meanwhile, over at Vought HQ, Homelander is amping up his patriotism by pushing his team to become “wrathful gods” against the protesting humans, including new members of The Seven, Firecracker (Valorie Curry) and Sister Sage (Susan Heyward). To add to the chaos, “Gen V” supe characters Cate (Maddie Phillips) and Sam (Asa Germann) make a brief cameo, hinting that they will continue supporting the Vought machine in their roles as the “Guardians of Godolkin” from the Vought-sponsored college where the supe virus was created in secret.

The Boys Season 4

In the new trailer for Season 4 of the Prime Video superhero show, Billy Butcher is facing tough times with not much time left to live. Meanwhile, Homelander is on a power trip, taking control of The Seven and causing chaos.

The trailer kicks off with Butcher entering The Boys' headquarters, visibly defeated and seeking redemption for his past mistakes. He acknowledges his shortcomings to the group, expressing "I owe Becca my life, and all I see are messes I've made and I ain't got time to fix it. I can do one thing right with the time I've got left, and I can't do it alone. I can't do it without you." Butcher's plea for unity sets the stage for a high-stakes showdown with Homelander and The Seven.

As the trailer transitions to scenes of chaos and unrest, Homelander emerges as a formidable antagonist, rallying The Seven with a chilling declaration to save a corrupt country by any means necessary.

Butcher says, "This country is corrupt beyond repair," as the angry protesters begin to fight with one another, he continues, "So we've gotta save it. It's not going to be easy, we're going to have to do some terrible things for the greater good." With tensions escalating and violent clashes erupting between protesters and supes, the world is on the brink of destruction.

Amidst the chaos, Butcher unveils a shocking revelation: he's discovered a virus that can kill supes, including Homelander. However, not everyone is on board with Butcher's plan, including Starlight, played by Erin Moriarty, who questions the morality of resorting to such extreme measures.

As the conflict intensifies, The Boys deal with their own moral compasses, torn between seeking revenge and striving for redemption. Hughie, played by Jack Quaid, advocates for a more humane approach, saying, "If we're ever going to win against monsters, we need to start acting human."

To summarise in Season Four, things are really intense. Victoria Neuman is getting closer to being in charge, and Homelander is getting even stronger. Butcher, who's sick and doesn't have much time left, lost Becca's son and his role as leader of The Boys. The rest of the team is fed up with his lies. With so much at stake, they have to find a way to put aside their differences and save the world.

Joining the cast for Season 4 are Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (whose entrance marks the show’s latest “Supernatural” reunion).

“The Boys” is one of Amazon’s most prized IPs, with the franchise currently consisting of the main series and superhero college spinoff “Gen V,” which has been renewed for Season 2, as well as animated anthology “Diabolical” and a Spanish-language series that’s in the development stage.

The fourth season of “The Boys” was among the many TV and film titles delayed by the 2023 writers and actors strikes. However, fans were treated to spinoff series, “Gen V,” while “The Boys” was on hiatus, as production had been completed on the first season of that show before the work stoppages. “Gen V” also gave a few hints as to where the plot is headed in Season 4.

Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s bestselling comic book series, Amazon’s “The Boys” is led by showrunner Eric Kripke, who executive produces alongside Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Phil Sgriccia, Michaela Starr, Paul Grellong, David Reed, Meredith Glynn, Judalina Neira, Ken F. Levin and Jason Netter.

Karl Urban's Butcher seeks help from his team as Homelander plots a bloody rampage for power, particularly as he begins to feel the fatal effects of Temp V.
The trailer also shows Homelander's ongoing relationship with Ryan, including his murder of an unknown person.
After nearly two years of waiting, The Boys season 4 official trailer has arrived, teasing Billy Butcher's bloody final mission. Prime Video's adaptation of Garth Ennis' superhero satire graphic novel was renewed for season 4 just a week after season 3 premiered, with production having run in early 2023, though the release being held until the conclusion of the Writers Guild of America strike. The streamer has since steadily released new looks at the season to build up anticipation, primarily centered around Homelander's upcoming presidential campaign.

Prime Video has surprise released the official The Boys season 4 trailer, which can be viewed below:

The video sees Karl Urban's Butcher turning to his titular team for help in his "desperate" final mission to bring down Supes as he begins to feel the life-threatening effects of the Temp V compound, utilizing the Supe-killing virus from Gen V. The trailer also sees Homelander putting together a new Seven team and embarking on a bloody rampage in order to win his Presidential election.

Will The Boys Season 4 End With Butcher's Death?

A recent production update for The Boys season 5 could be a promising sign for Urban's return.

One of the biggest points of intrigue from The Boys season 4 trailer is the ongoing tease of Butcher's health problems from his ongoing use of Temp V, with the season 3 finale confirming he would only have 12–18 months to live. Theories have since swirled about how the show would tackle the potential demise of one of its lead characters, with some noting that a closer adherence to the comics could be the answer by having Butcher take the real Compound V and develop regenerative abilities.

The Boys Season 5 Update Isn't Surprising After Gen V's Renewal
After building a popular and critically acclaimed universe, The Boys season 5's recent update isn't surprising after the renewal of Gen V.

Despite some of these concerns, a recent production update for The Boys season 5 could be a promising sign for Urban's return. While not officially confirmed by Prime Video, a production listing indicated that a fifth season of the show is not only already in development, but began filming on April 8 and will run until August 22. Though the listing didn't indicate whether Urban would be involved, the fact the show's future may be set in stone is a promising sign for Butcher to find a way to survive his Temp V health concerns.

Everything Else The Boys Season 4 Trailer Reveals
Another major reveal from The Boys season 4 trailer is the confirmation of just how connected it will be to Gen V as it features the appearances of Asa Germann's Sam and Maddie Phillips' Cate. The duo were last seen in the Gen V season 1 finale having led an attack on non-Supe students, with Homelander having stopped Marie from further hurting Cate, while she and Sam went on to be hailed as the "Guardians of Godolkin" by the media. While Butcher's discovery of the Supe-killing virus was already confirmed to be carrying over into season 4, this is an interesting first confirmation of characters crossing over from the spinoff.

Several The Boys characters have already had cameos in Gen V and there are plenty more great additions that we'd love to see be a part of season 2.

The Boys season 4 trailer also confirms that Homelander's guidance for the new and returning members of The Seven will be a much darker one. While he's generally been lenient towards his cohorts' unsavory antics, Homelander looks to not only be leaning into them, but even inviting them to go further into becoming full villains by saying they should be gods of "wrath". This can be seen particularly with The Deep's brutal murder of an unknown figure with a baseball bat, all of which seems to leave Jessie A-Train in a place of uncertainty about his place on the team.

Interestingly, The Boys season 4 trailer is also missing a few notable characters, while also giving a brief spotlight to others, namely Victoria Neuman, who will be running as Dakota Bob's Vice President, and Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy, who has yet to be confirmed for the season, but the actor was spotted wearing season 4 crew merchandise, sparking theories of his return. Additionally, while Starlight's conflicts to gain public favor against Vought look to be a big part of the season, her work with The Boys also seems to point towards some internal team conflicts.
Prime Video’s “The Boys” franchise, a satirical and deconstructivist look at superheroes, just keeps going and going. There’s the spinoff series, “Gen V,” which season four of “The Boys” picks up from, and there’s also a new Mexico-set version of the series coming from Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, both of whom will guest star on that spinoff. But the main flagship brand is back with season four.

Posters and recent images that teased the season spoke about the in-universe election happening within the series. The photos were clear; things were looking up for the Vought heroes led by Homelander (Antony Starr) on Election Day, and Billy Bucher (Karl Urban) and The Boys will likely face a crushing defeat. In the series, Homeland backs Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) and her running-mate presidential candidate Robert Singer (Jim Beaver).

A recent social post revealed more. Season four takes place one month after the events of “Gen V,” Butcher knows about the virus that plagued heroes last season, Homelander will stand trial for killing a Starlighter, and the events of this season will lead straight into “Gen V” season two so they are looking to align the franchises more and more.

According to a recent interview with “The Boys” showrunner Eric Kripke, the superhero-targeted virus introduced on the aforementioned spinoff show “Gen V” will play a vital plot role in “The Boys” Season 4. Kripke also noted that most of the new season was completed before the strikes, which is why we now have a new release date, TK, 2024, and a new teaser trailer, which debuted at CCXP in Brazil this week.

Here’s the season four synopsis:

The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is joining the cast in a new mystery role, and it’s unclear if Jensen Ackles will be back as Soldier Boy. Two new heroes join the fray in season four: Firecracker, portrayed by Valorie Curry (“Veronica Mars”), and Sister Sage, played by Susan Heyward (“Orange Is The New Black”).

Returning cast members include Starr as Homelander, Erin Moriarty as Annie January/Starlight, Chace Crawford as The Deep, Jessie T. Usher as A-Train, Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid as Hughie, Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk, Karen Fukuhara as Kimiko, Tomer Capone as Frenchie, Colby Minifie as Ashley, and the aforementioned Claudia Doumit.
