One of the first, and perhaps biggest opponents, ever for Mario has to be Donkey Kong. Miyamoto used "donkey" to convey "stubborn" in English; while "Kong" was simply to imply him being a "large ape", the name Donkey Kong was intended to convey "stubborn ape" to the American audience. When he suggested this name to Nintendo of America, people laughed, but the name stuck. Since the original Donkey Kong, DK has featured in many different games. Intitially he was of course the villain, but he eventually became the hero of his own adventures. That being said, if you were looking for 3 amazing Donkey Kong Games you need to play, it is on like Donkey Kong and we're going to recommend 3 of our favorites.

Donkey Kong
Game Boy
DK on the Game Boy was something pretty special. Donkey Kong begins with the four levels found in the original arcade game, in which Mario must reach the top of the level and save Pauline. After these four initial stages are completed, the usual arcade ending begins, but after a few notes of the "victory theme" Donkey Kong revives, grabs Pauline again, and takes off with her, with Mario giving chase. The player is then presented with 97 additional stages spanning nine worlds, for a total of 101 stages with the very last one a fight against a mutated, larger Donkey Kong.

Donkey Kong Country Returns
Nintendo Wii
Donkey Kong Country Returns was the first installment of the Donkey Kong Country series to not involve the original series developer Rare. Instead, it was Revolution Studios. Similar to our next game, in Donkey Kong Country Returns you get to play as DK and Diddy Kong through a number of levels, collecting KONG letters, bananas, and more. It has amazing graphics, gameplay, and music, and a MUST PLAY!

Donkey Kong Country
Super Nintendo
DKC is the one game that relaunched DK as not just a top Nintendo Character, but a hero. Developed towards the end of the SNES life cycle, it introduced so much newness to the system and gameplay. I love this game so much, one of the finest ever produced on any platform.
