Jeanie’s 2023 Turkey Hunt

It was Friday 5-12-23, Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin private land. Jeanie and I got in the tent at about 4:30am, and I started with light hen calls and gobbles to draw in hens at about 5:00. We immediately had some gobbles from three different locations around us, but they were all quite a distance away. Around 6:40 we had two hens start to talk with me as they were coming closer. There was not a peep from any tom since sun up, but I made a gobble with the two hens there and I heard a return gobble, a tom was heading to us. The tom was by the hens at fifteen yards from the tent but on the side of the tent where we could not see through, there is a window on that side but this was my son-in-laws tent and I didn’t know it existed, I didn’t want to open it for fear of the hens catching the movement. Finally after some hot hen calls I got the tom who was on the opposite side of the tent from our decoys, and could not see them well started moving around my side of the tent. I opened the tent window for Jeanie to stick her Browning Silver 12 gauge with a 3” turkey load through; the tom was about ten yards away so she had to be right on as her pattern would only be about 3” or 4”. It was 7:00 when the tom fell to the ground; the hens hung around a while, and then wandered off. Jeanie did a great job and followed the tom perfectly as you can see how fast he was moving by watching the speed of her barrel movement. It was a fun, and very intense hunt.
