Chinese workers left hanging off skyscraper during storm
A sudden, violent storm in China’s capital Beijing was powerful enough to knock people clean off their feet… and knock several maintenance workers off the side of a skyscraper. The workers were cleaning the many, many windows of the China Central Television (CCTV) Headquarters – the avant-garde skyscraper that looks like the kind of building Escher would have nightmares about. So will the workers now, after falling off the most precarious point: the signature overhang, 162m above ground.
Their harnesses held, thankfully, but that left them dangling and swinging under the 40th floor, much to the horror of downtown Beijing’s residents (the ones that weren’t being blown away themselves, that is). Slowly, carefully and windily they were able to lower themselves down to the relative safety of the ground, unharmed but probably needing a change of underpants. It is unclear whether they were able to finish cleaning the windows.

Several dead after fireworks explosion in India
A devastating fireworks explosion has killed at least three people and injured more than 30 more after a festival in Puri, Odisha went horribly wrong. Hundreds of devotees were celebrating the annual Chandan Yatra festival at the Lord Jagannath temple with the traditional firework display when a freak, stray ‘splinter’ fell onto the pile of fireworks, igniting them all at once. The huge explosion saw people diving into the Narendra Pushkarinee (the temple reservoir) to escape the fire and out-of-control fireworks shooting directly into the crowd.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that the state would bear all medical expenses to treat those injured in the tragedy. Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra said that ‘our priority is to provide treatment to the injured and then we will look into the other matters.’

Mexican mayoral candidate shot and killed
A politician in Mexico’s Guerrero state has been fatally shot during a campaign rally. Alfredo Cabrera was meeting with voters in the town of Coyuca de Benitez on Wednesday, when an unknown person approached him and shot him several times at point blank range. The gunman was reportedly killed at the scene.
Cabrera was part of a coalition supporting Xochitl Galvez, a businesswoman currently polling second in the country’s presidential race. His death is the latest in a spate of murders plaguing Mexican elections, with the government reporting on Tuesday that at least 22 people running for local office had been murdered since last September.
Security is set to be ramped up ahead of Sunday’s local and national elections, with around 27,000 soldiers and National Guard members to be deployed on polling day.

POV footage as Russian soldier storms trench
RT has obtained POV bodycam footage of a Russian soldier storming a Ukrainian trench, and it’s the kind of combat where armchair experts tell you isn’t what war is really like. The time and location of the clip are unknown, but the trench appears to be well-manned and well-armed. The soldier enters the trench and tentatively fires at the Ukrainian troops in a dugout at its end. The Ukrainians tentatively fire back. The soldier is exposed on two sides, and battle is raging overhead – for him and his companion, there simply is no turning back. He pulls a grenade, fumbles slightly with the pin, then makes the throw of a lifetime: over the top, and back down into the dugout. They run.
A muffled scream and it is all over. The grenade did its job and cleared out the soldiers. Now, he must do his job and figure out what they were planning. He fires a few warning shots and enters the dugout. Three dead soldiers, one strangely wearing a Norwegian flag. It’s unclear what nationality the man was, and whether it was merely a donated uniform or purchased patch. The other findings in the trench were more clear: a Swedish-British NLAW anti-armor guided missile system and a Swedish AT-4 grenade launcher.
